Description
After 20 years in Nairobi's Railway Museum, 'Mount Gelai' makes its long-awaited return to the main line.
The articulated Class 59 was the largest and most powerful steam locomotive in Africa, with a massive tractive effort of 83,000 pounds.
Wild animals in the plains, the famous Tsavo River and the Taita Hills form the scenic backdrop to this 330 mile safari through the African bush, ending with the famous spiral descent into Mombasa.
On the footplate is 5918s former regular driver, Kirpal Singh Sandhu, reliving his glory days in the 1960s and 1970s.
He invites us to celebrate the return of steam at the 'Railway Pub' in his Mombasa home; drinks are served from the firebox of the ultimate railway souvenir - a genuine full size Garratt cab complete with all gauges and controls!
A flashback to the 1970s brings us a film portrait of a 'Governor' Class Garratt on the Taveta branch and steam at Nairobi's loco shed.
High quality archive photographs of early USA Baldwin locos, Indian F Class 0-6-0s and a man-eating lion which killed over 50 construction workers, make this an entertaining and informative programme.
This new version includes a new sequence of 5918s special trip to Kibwezi.
