Description

The Talyllyn Railway is the world's first preserved railway, saved in1951 when a group of enthusiasts refused to let it be dismantled, theymanaged to convince the owners to let them take it over.

The Talyllyn was originally built in 1865 to transport slate from the Bryn Eglws Quarry to Tywyn Wharf transshipment sidings, but had a passenger service too.

Unique through having all its original 1865 locomotives and carriages still in use, the Talyllyn is one of Britain's premier preserved railways.

The seven and a quarter mile run from Tywyn Wharf station takes the traveller from the coast to the deepest forest in the Nant Gwernol Gorge, passing through some of the finest scenery in Wales.

This film covers the railway's unique history, the motive power and carriages. There is a full line description, coverage of many special events from steam rallies to Guest Driver trains.

The film finishes with a run up the line on the footplate of loco No. 2 'Dolgoch'.

A fitting reminder of a great day out.
