Description
In the far southeast corner of Switzerland in the Canton of Graubunden is a metre gauge railway system with nearly 400 route kilometres. It serves some of the remotest places in Switzerland with an hourly passenger service interspersed with a frequent and varied freight service. Heavy snow does not affect operations except to increase the number of drivers opting for the car-carrying trains through the Alps.
The RhB possesses some of the very latest state-of-the-art locomotives but its history stretches back more than a century. In this programme some of the earliest electric locomotives, including the famous chocolate-brown crocodiles, can be seen in action.
The Rhatische Bahn is in a constant state of modernisation. Container services were introduced in 1997 and feature in this programme. The Vereina Tunnel, the longest narrow gauge tunnel in the world is under construction and will revolutionalise communication in this mountainous region.
This programme covers the entire RhB network. It contains considerable detail as well as showing trains in stunning Alpine scenery.
