Description

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the BBC broadcast a series of television programmes called Railway Roundabout, featuring train lines which proved to be on the point of closure and locomotives that were about to disappear forever.

This archive film footage has been transformed by Ian Allan and is now available as a boxed set of eight Railway Roundabout DVDs, all superbly recreating the lost age of steam!

Railway Roundabout 1958 (55 Minutes)

Highlights of this fascinating DVD include views of the 'Bristolian' in the days of steam and trains in action on the Lickey incline.

The DVD takes viewers on a journey to Ireland to see the Irish narrow gauge in all its glory, then back to Southampton harbour for more steam scenes.

The Hayling Island branch is also included as is the Cardigan branch.

Finally we hop on board the very last train from Abergavenny to Merthyr.

Railway Roundabout 1959 (56 Minutes)

Highlights of this fascinating DVD include views of the ex-GER 'E4' at Cambridge and the closing of the Wye Valley line.

Heading north we view the traffic on the scenic Skye line which runs from Fort William to Mallaig.

Viewers then visit a Worcestershire branch line which is followed by a trip to King's Cross shed.

Other locomotives and stock featured include the Midland 'Compound' number 1000 and the 'Brighton Belle'.

Railway Roundabout 1960 (51 Minutes)

Highlights of this fascinating DVD include two 'Dukedogs' to Barmouth and the 'T9' to Tavistock.

Viewers are treated to a visit to Perth Shed and the Cromford and High Peak lines.

The repainted ex GN of SR 'Gordon Highlander' on the Spey Valley line is a wonderful sight.

Then we travel South East to view trains at Newcastle upon Tyne and at York (including the old museum).

Railway Roundabout 1961 (60 Minutes)

Highlights of this fascinating DVD include:

  • A journey from Bath to Evercreech Junction
  • The last train from Bala to Ffestiniog
  • The Lancashire and Yorkshire Special
  • And the Severn and Wye in the Forest of Dean.

Welsh narrow gauge highlights are also featured in addition to the locomotives of London Transport and Swindon (Numbers 3440, 2516 and 4003).

Railway Roundabout 1962 (54 Minutes)

This fascinating DVD takes on a distinct Isle of Wight flavour, with highlights including various Isle of Wight engines and a journey from Ryde to Ventnor.

The 'Cambrian Coast Express' is also captured on film along with images of Southern Region trains at Seaton Junction and the Jones' 'Goods' to Kyle of Lochalsh train.

The Bluebell line in its early preserved form is featured as are the ex-MR locomotives of Kirtley and Johnson.
