Description
Filmed over a number of years and brought right up to date to March 2011, this 60 minute DVD covers the history of this well-known railway which is now a major tourist attraction in the south of England.
Many archive scenes are within the programme which date from the 1930s through to the 1970s, including a cab ride along the whole route from the main line at Winchester junction through to Alton.
The meaning of 'Alps' in this case is of course the route the line takes as it progresses either side of Medstead & Four Marks station, the summit of the line. The DVD illustrates the building of the line in the 1860s right through its operation in the 1930s and towards its closure in 1973. M7s were a common sight on the line with push-pull sets.
The beginnings of the preserved railway in the mid 1970s are viewed with colour 16mm archive films. Over the past 30 years a vast number of locomotives have operated over the railway, including the line's own locomotives, but also many visiting engines. These include; Sir Nigel Gresley, Duchess of Hamilton, Bittern, City of Truro, Earl of Berkeley, Beattie Well Tank, Tornado, Pitchford Hall, 7F No.88 and many more. We see these locomotives at various locations along the 10 mile route.
