The Middleton Railway, based in Leeds is now a well established tourist attraction. During 2010 the railway celebrated their 50th Anniversary since the railway became a preserved railway.

The railway stretches back to 1758 when it was the first railway to be built using an Act of Parliament. In 1812 it also became the first railway to commercially and successfully use steam locomotives to haul trains of coal from the Colliery to the city of Leeds. Over 150 years later, the line was still being used to move coal out of the colliery, having been operated by private owners, the National Coal Board and British Railways.

In late 1959 some Leeds University Union Railway Society members, led by Doctor Fred Youell looked at the idea of acquiring a short stretch of line to create a preservation site, they later moved into the Northern section of the Middleton Railway. Now in 2010 the railway is celebrating their 50th Anniversary of volunteer working and to celebrate the occasion a series of events were held.

During June 2010 the railway celebrated their '50th Anniversary' which featured a gala using their selection of steam and diesel trains. The event also featured trips down the Balm Road Branch and the opportunity to travel in an open wagon.

A series of other events took place during 2010 including a Manchester Ship Canal gala which featured visiting engines MSC No.32 and MSC No.4002 from the East Lancashire Railway. A selection of steam and diesels also run from the railways selection of engines.
