Description
The Glacier Express is probably Switzerland's most famous narrow gauge train. It is known as the slowest express train in the world and when you see the treacherous terrain it crosses in the 290 kilometers between Zermatt and St. Moritz it's not difficult to understand why. Three metre gauge railways play host to the train, the Brig-Visp-Zermatt Railway, the Furka Oberalp Bahn and the Rhaetian Railway.
This cab ride is on the Furka Oberalp Bahn between Brig and Oberwald. The locomotive is a powerful new HGe 4/4 type and the view ahead through the large windscreen is simply stunning. The route is mountainous and incorporates several rack sections and a spiral tunnel.
There is no commentary but place names are identified on the screen. Other trains are passed in this 50 minute journey and it is an excellent way to view the railway and the Alpine scenery through which it passes.
