This is the second of a two-volume set tracing the development of rail-borne freight from the British Rail era of the early 1970s to the present day. Part One covered the nationalised operation up to the creation of the Trainload companies; Part 2 focuses on the privatised era from 1995.

Freight operation since privatisation has certainly been colourful, with each new operator creating its own liveries. The face of British rail freight has changed drastically with the introduction of North American-built locomotives. But, in recent years. some newer companies have turned to veteran British built locos to bolster fleets. It has certainly been a fascinating period.

Some of the numerous highlights: The early EWS years when the existing loco classes had their swansong; the first moves by 66001 and its test run; the ghost locos; Freightliner’s Class 47s; 87101 on the Ford train; the introduction of Class 57/0s; a very rare shot of Freightliner’s short-lived 66521; DRS 47s on intermodal; GBRf enters the fray; Fastline 56s and a 66 on coal; Advenza scrap trains with a 47 and 57, plus a 66 on the flyash; Colas’s steady growth, from 47s to the reintroduction of Class 56; a Virgin 57/3 on the logs; 37218 on the Sellafield to Drigg working; DB Schenker’s takeover of EWS and the reintroduction of Class 60s; DCR 31s and 56s; GBRf 20s and DRS 57s on intermodal . . . and lots more. On the loco front, some 20 different diesel and electric classes appear.
