Description

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, the only railway in the country that features a complete branch line has enjoyed another fruitful year during 2011.

The five mile railway that runs from the town of Keighley to the village of Oxenhope has held many events during 2011 including their annual gala events, war weekends, vintage services and much more.

February saw the railway hold their usual annual steam gala which had a high presence of LMS 'Black 5's'. Visiting the railway was LMS 5MT No.44871 famous for its role in the final steam hauled service under BR and LMS 5MT No.44767 'George Stephenson' famous for its unique valve gear. The event featured a wide collection of passenger, vintage and freight services. Also in service was 90733, 80002, 47279, 41241, 957 and 1704.

2011 saw the end of LMS 3F No.47279, a popular engine on the Worth Valley over the past 10 years however the engine's boiler ticket expired in July. Returning to steam for the first time in 24 years was LMS 4F No.43924, ready to replace the 'Jinty'. The engines did manage to run together providing the sight of two Fowler engines together, an enjoyable sight for any LMS fan! To celebrate the return of the 4F both the 4F and 3F ran parallel up Keighley bank.

LMS 5MT No.45212 another engine famous for its role in the End of Steam was returned to the Keighley & Worth Valey Railway after nine years on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The engine ran on several occasions before been withdrawn during October 2011 for overhaul. To celebrate the 43rd Anniversary of the 'End Of Steam' the engine was able to run trains up and down the Worth Valley branch.

October 2011 saw GWR 28XX No.2807 visit the railway for the first time, the engine which is normally based on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway visited the railway and volunteers and passengers enjoyed an extended stay as the engine also stayed for the annual Beer and Music Festival.
